31st EWG-IE meeting
(Working Group on Internal Erosion in Embankment Dams and their Foundation)
and
6th EWG-OOE meeting
(Working Group on Overflow and Overtopping Erosion)
23 – 28 June 2025
WELCOME MESSAGE
Welcome to the Brno Meeting on Internal Erosion and Overflow and Overtopping Erosion. We are pleased to invite you to the Brno University of Technology, Faculty of Civil Engineering to attend the:
- 31th Meeting of the European Working Group on Internal Erosion, from June 23nd to 25th 2025
- 6th Meeting of the European Working Group on Overflow and Overtopping Erosion, from June 25th to 28th 2025.
After hosting the conference in Brno back in 2011, we are delighted to return once more. Following the recent EWG-IE-30 and EWG-OOE-5 meetings in Bologna this September 2024, the Brno event aims to build on this momentum by gathering leading researchers, scientists, and engineers from both private and public sectors across Europe and beyond. This conference will provide a platform to share the latest research, case studies, and methodologies on two critical topics:
- internal erosion through water-retaining structures, such as embankment dams, levees and dikes, and in their foundations;
- overflow erosion of embankment dams and levees, overflow erosion of bedrock downstream of concrete dams and overtopping erosion of embankment dams and levees.
Continuing the tradition of fostering vibrant discussions and collaborations, this event invites experts, academics, and practitioners to explore advances in risk assessment, mitigation strategies, and real-world applications. This unique gathering promises a welcoming and intellectually stimulating environment where fresh perspectives and novel ideas can flourish. Join us in Brno for an engaging and productive exchange of knowledge among the global community of erosion professionals.
MEETING VENUE
The meeting will be held in Brno, the Czech Republic’s second-largest city, known for its vibrant mix of history, technology, and culture. A hub for innovation, Brno hosts several prestigious universities, including Brno University of Technology (BUT).
While in Brno, visitors can explore historical landmarks (Špilberk Castle, Villa Tugendhat). The city’s culinary scene offers a diverse range of restaurants, cafes, and breweries, featuring both traditional Czech dishes and modern culinary trends.
As part of the conference, participants will have the unique opportunity to visit the Laboratory of water research, located in the historic buildings of the Faculty of Civil Engineering at Brno University of Technology. The excursion will also include a visit to the picturesque Brno Dam, featuring a boat trip that allows you to experience the scenic beauty of the surroundings from the water.
The extra technical tour will feature the site of the failed Desná dam, which ruptured in 1916 due to internal erosion and the Souš dam, which was built at the same time as Desná dam.
We look forward to meeting you all in Brno!
